Conflicts arise from incompatibility in land use in different socio-economic and environmental systems leading to undesirable social, economic and environmental impacts. Examples of these are the loss of life and property through river flooding following deforestation, the drainage of wetlands and floodplain embankments, conflicts between housing and economic land use, the loss of biodiversity following the fragmentation of ecological habitats by urbanization and transport infrastructure, and deterioration in the quality of life. Aim and scope The aim of this conference is to identify (potential) land use changes in western urbanized countries, and the conflicts which may arise from these changes, through considering such questions as: a.. How can 'smart' spatial configurations of socio-economic and environmental systems reduce spatial conflicts and enhance sustainable development? b.. What improvements are necessary in integrated modeling to analyze, simulate and assess spatial land use dynamics? c.. In what way can we improve the application of scientific knowledge on land use dynamics in spatial planning processes? Central issues of the conference are: a.. The integration of knowledge on land use dynamics from different disciplines b.. The application of that knowledge to spatial planning in western urbanized countries Theoretical, methodological and practical viewpoints will be shared from such disciplines as the environmental and social sciences, housing and transport, planning and integrated modeling. Discussions are planned between academics, policy makers and planners to reveal ways of enhancing the integration of scientific knowledge in spatial planning aimed at sustainable development. [Gisideas] Update on GIS-IDEAS Symposium

Dear All, Little over a month is left before the GIS-IDEAS Symposium is held from in Hanoi 25-28 September, 2002. I would like to express my personal thanks to all the participants for submitting very interesting papers to the Symposium. The Proceeding volume for GIS-IDEAS (about 60 full-papers covering 350 pages) has been just finalized and dispatched to the printers. The Proceeding will be made available to the participants at the Symposium venue. The GIS-IDEAS web-site has also been updated and is available at http://gisws.media.osaka-cu.ac.jp/gisideas/ The program for the GIS-IDEAS has also been almost finalized and can be viewed (also downloaded) for the above mentioned web-site. The program that is presently made available is subject to some minor changes. The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of GIS-IDEAS 2002 has recently decided that *No Registration Fee* will be charged to participants and who have pre-registered for the GIS-IDEAS Symposium. LOC is also arranging for field trip during the GIS-IDEAS Symposium.
