I am forwarding mail from Dr. Uyen of Hanoi University of Mining and Geology about issue of VISA for visiting Hanoi for GIS-IDEAS 2004.

I hope most of the participants would be able to proceed to Vietnam on tourist VISA. If that is not possible Dr. Uyen will arrange for issue of "visa registration numbers" for official VISA.

In case you need official VISA please provide the following details to Dr. Uyen (ichumg@hn.vnn.vn) ASAP.

Dear Venkatesh,

Please be informed that there are two kinds of visas to enter Vietnam. One is tourist visa and the other is working visa.

To obtain the working visa, the Vietnamese institution, which the visitor(s) are supposed to work with, is responsible for getting the "visa registration number" from the emigration office and send it to the relevant diplomatic mission at the visitors' country. Based on this number the visa will be issued. In our case the Hanoi University of Mining and Geology will take the role for getting the above mentioned number for the visitor(s) provided that the relevant visitor(s) give us the followings:

1. Full name
2. Sex
3. Date of birth
4. Nationality
5. Passport number
6. Current occupation
7. Consulate or Embassy where VISA will be applied

With the tourist visa things are not so complicated. The visitor(s) can request the visa directly at the diplomatic mission without any kind number.

So it is up to the visitor(s) which kind of visa to choose at their convenience.
