Dear All; *Requesting nominations for the David A. Hastings Award* The FOSS4G-Asia 2018 organizing committee is proud to announce the inaugural *David A. Hastings Award* for exceptional contributions to the Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) community in Asia. Recipients may have helped spread FOSS4G in academia, promoted the use of FOSS4G in projects in Asia, or also helped translate front-end FOSS4G tools in local languages *"David was an early influence on FOSS4G, having written a GRASS GIS How to , as well as being heavily involved in the first FOSS4G event at Chula University in Bangkok Thailand in 2004, where he helped bring the future founders of the annual FOSS4G event Venkatesh Raghavan, Markus Neteler, and Jeff McKenna together; indeed they shared many laughs and stories on that special trip together. He also led an âInstallfestâ at that FOSS4G 2004 event, which set the tone for so many future events. David would later go on to study at the global level a measurement of human development and happiness, what he coined as the Human Security Index. Dr. David A. Hastings unfortunately left us for his heavenly abode on the 13th of November, 2017. He leaves behind wonderful memories and deep sense of appreciation with all his friends and colleagues. David is survived by his gracious wife his son currently residing in Colorado, USA. He will be missed for his wisdom and wit and his contributions long remembered."* The organizing committee is *requesting nominations* for the *David A. Hastings Award*. [Foss4ga.discuss] Successful Conclusion of FOSS4G-Asia 2014

Dear All, 10 days have passed since the successful conclusion of FOSS4G-Asia 2014. On behalf of the organizers, I will like to thank one and all for support and active participation in FOSS4G-Asia 2014. The conference was attended by more then 112 participants for 18 different countries and by all means a grand success. International Journal of Geoinformatics [1] is planning to bring out Special Issue of FOSS4G-Asia 2014 sometimes in June 2015. We will send notifications to authors whose papers will be shortlisted for the special issue by the scientific committee of FOSS4G-Asia 2014. Three awards were presented as below. 1) Best FOSS4G Use Case Award to Kazeem Owolabi and others for "Use case: supporting polio eradication and Ebola outbreak response" 2) Best FOSS4G Developer Award to GÃ©rald Fenoy and NIcolas Bozon for "MapMint: The 100% service-oriented GIS platform" 3) Best Poster Award to Jayasinghe and others for "Assess the level of vulnerability to climate exaggerated disasters in Sri Lankan Coastal Areas: An Application of Open Source Geographic Information System" 2015 we will have the global gathering of FOSS4G in Seoul [2] and a special Asian Session at FOSS4G-2015 was announced by the Conference Chair Mr. Sanghee Shin during FOSS4G-Asia 2014. We hope to see all of you at FOSS4G-Seoul in 2015. FOSS4G-Asia will be held again in 2016 somewhere in Asia. If have any suggestion for the FOSS4G-Asia 2016 venue, please let us know. This FOSS4G-Asia Conference mailing list [3] will remain active and if you have any feedback to help to improve the future conference, please feel free to write on the ML. Prepare your slides as a *PowerPoint* file or a *PDF* and bring them with you to the conference. The total time allotted to each presenter is *20 minutes *(15 Minutes for Presentation and 5 Minutes for Q/A). You will need to *load your presentation onto the session computer 30min before your stream*, to facilitate a smooth transition between speakers. Name your file with the session No, Presentation ID and name of the presenting author (e.g., *Session1-PID1-Jayasinghe*). (Note: Session and Presentation ID will be available on the conference website on 25th November, 2018). We recommend that you also bring your presentation on a data stick or other portable memory device *If you wish you can use FOSS4G Asia template attached herewith. Feel free to use and modify it. * *Audio-Visual Equipment* The presentation room will be equipped with a laptop PC and projector. There will also be a microphone. Authors illustrate their study findings by displaying graphs, photos, diagrams, and a small amount of text on poster boards. In presenting your research with a poster, you should aim to use the poster as a means for generating *active discussion* of the research. Poster sessions are a valuable opportunity for authors to present papers and meet with *interested attendees for in-depth technical discussions*. Poster sessions are scheduled for *90 minutes*. Location is 5th Floor, Department of Town & Country Planning (as same as area allocate for lunch and tea) *If you wish you can use FOSS4G Asia template attached herewith. Feel free to use and modify it. * *Preparing your poster* The poster must be *A0 size* (A0 size is 841mm x 1189mm) in *portrait orientation*. The *title* should be the same as in the submitted abstract. Display *poster ID* long with the authors Name (Note: Poster ID will be available on the conference website on 25th November, 2018). The poster should be *easily readable* at a distance of two metres. Use UPPER and lower case for general content as the use of all-capital text is difficult to read. Avoid using a mixture of type/font styles. *Simplicity* is the key. Keep to the point, and donât try to cover too many things. Present only enough data to support your conclusions. On the other hand, make sure that you present sufficient data to support your conclusions. Presenting authors *should print their physical poster* based on the requirements listed in the sections above. FOSS4G Asia 2018 Conference does not print posters on behalf of presenters. Authors *may bring additional written material* of a non commercial nature that supplements the material presented on the poster. Business cards is a great networking opportunity. QR Codes (optional). FOSS4G Asia 2018 is promoting the idea of QR Codes for authors to incorporate into their posters. This would allow you to add a barcode readable by smartphones. The barcode can be designed to link the person viewing your poster to a related video, your website, or your contact information. Computers without audio may be used to run demonstrations and display additional information or illustrations. No electrical outlets will be provided @ poster session area. Please come with *your computer charged*!, if you want to use in the poster session *Poster Setup Information* 1. Poster authors can set-up their posters *before 30min* on the day of their poster session. 2. *Poster numbers* will be posted on the poster boards in numerical order; please find your paper number and post your poster in the designated space. 3. FOSS4G Asia 2018 provides a *display board* and *thumbtacks* for presenters to use to attach posters made of paper or lightweight poster board. Bring tape, heavy duty fasteners or tacks as back up to the thumbtacks as determined necessary. 4. A poster author or coauthor is required to *stand by the poster* during the scheduled poster session to answer questions from attendees. 5. Presenters *must remove their posters immediately after the poster session.* 6. Posters and other materials not removed at the end of the poster session will be considered unwanted and will be discarded. 7. FOSS4G Asia 2018 assumes no responsibility for posters left up after the end of each poster session.

Dear Workshop Participants, *InstructionS to participants - WORKSHOPS* Workshops are either half-day (4 hours) or full-day (8 hours) with hands-on experiences to participants. Participants shall attend the registered workshop sessions only. If you wish to change the workshop, you have to obtain prior permission from the organizing committee. Workshops are organized in computer labs and regular lecture rooms as per the space availability. Participants for workshops scheduled to be held on venues other than computer labs must bring their own computer with the requested software installed on it. Install relevant tools/software and download necessary data/libraries prior to attending the workshop as mentioned in the workshop instructions document attached herewith. *Kindly refer the attached document thoroughly to verify the registered workshop and to be aware of specific instructions * Looking forward to seeing you soon in Moratuwa, Sri Lanka.
